hey peeps,

i am going to be taking a break from tumblr.  i’m not sure how long. i have been getting a slew of people (who i can only guess are from “social justice” tumblr) telling me to kill myself, making violent threats, sending me my home address they somehow found.  my inbox this morning was graced with pictures of my apartment building.

i honestly have no words.

love you all.

I don’t know who you are or why these people hate you but for Christ sake, call the police. This is illegal and probably very actionable.

It isn’t just Men’s Rights Activists pulling this shit either. Take a deep breath morons. Is your internet pet peeve worth going to jail for?

Circumstances like these make me want to re-do my Negativity poster thing, make it more concise. It’s easy to hate on people. It’s hard to feel compassion.

And even though it’s easy to hate the people hating and sending death threats to lacigreen, we shouldn’t. We should have compassion on them. We should take necessary action, but we can’t let our own passion dictate our actions.

Emotions like hate, anger, joy, pride, passion, these are to fuel our actions.
Our brain has to be the one to dictate what we do.

If you are making death threats, you are not using your brain.
If you are saying “OMFG THESE PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK UGH THE WORLD” you are reacting to your emotions.

I saw a lot of disappointment in the notes for this post, and I’m sure before long (or further in) there will be a lot of hate. This is really saddens me, that people waste their emotions and do nothing but voice them.

Can we have a Call to Action instead? Can we react with our brains, too? Can we work hard not to let passion overwhelm us? Can we try not to be so reactionary to social justice issues, and deal with them calmly, instead? It’s good to reblog things. It’s good to be upset at injustice and shit. anger is not a bad thing. It’s how to you use that anger that can make a difference with the issue, whether for good or ill.

^^Yup. Even if your cause is a righteous one, reacting with threats only gives your detractors ammunition. You won’t change minds with hate.

I get that a lot of social justice bloggers are young, and there’s a passion in young people which can be a tremendous force for good. The flip side of that is that inexperienced people can make bad mistakes before they know better.

Don’t undermine your cause by acting as badly or worse than your adversaries. And don’t make an angry decision which can have far-reaching consequences, like a criminal record.
