Before we get started…

Hi new followers. I’m not quite sure how this happened, but after I started daily updates, word seems to have gotten around about Una the Blade. I’m grateful for the exposure and the attention, but before things get out of control, I’d like to clear up a couple of issues.

First of all, Una the Blade is not going to be a webcomic. I have a webcomic already, for which I won a prestigious Xeric Grant. It’s called Much the Miller’s Son and it’s a comedy about Robin Hood’s least Merry Man.

There are two reasons why I’m not going the webcomic route with Una. One is the limitations of one-page-at-a-time posting. I need more space than that to tell this story. I’m planning to release the story in chunks roughly the same length as a monthly comic.

The other reason is sustainability. If I can make this comic pay for itself, then I’ll be able to create a lot more work. As it stands, I work full time as a storyboard artist and self-publish my own work in my spare time and at my own expense. I’ve advertised through Project Wonderful for years, but I’ve never made as much as I’ve put out. Even with free web-hosting, I’m losing money. So here’s what I’m going to do; I’m making each chapter of Una the Blade available as an e-book. I’ll set it up so you can purchase it online by donation, that way I make money and you guys pay whatever you think is fair.

The other point I need to bring up is continuity. To date I’ve drawn two ten-page webcomic stories featuring Una as well as two single-page “Sunday comics” for an anthology. I’ve also gone through numerous iterations of the character including an older version with a teenage daughter and a more barbaric version who went around topless. None of that stuff fits the continuity of the new series!

When I begin chapter one of Una the Blade I want you to forget everything you know about the story so far. I’ve taken a long time to find this character and there have been false starts along the way. Heck, the idea of a barbarian single mom started as a joke! It was only later that I decided I had something here. I hope you all will be willing to join me in discovering where this story takes us.

-Steve
